14 November 1976
Matruchhaya was founded on November 14, 1976, with the support of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and dedicated individuals from Goa, beginning with just one child.
Sanvordem railway station
The story of Matruchhaya is one of compassion, determination, and a deep commitment to humanity. It began with a heart-wrenching incident at the Sanvordem railway station in Goa, where an abandoned child—a helpless orphan—was discovered by a kind soul. This boy, left to fend for himself in an unforgiving world, became the spark that lit the flame of Matruchhaya’s mission to protect and nurture vulnerable children.
First child in care
Moved by the plight of this boy, a group of selfless individuals came together with a shared vision: no child should feel abandoned or unloved. With no resources or institutional support at the time, they took this child into their care, offering him shelter, food, and, most importantly, a sense of belonging. This simple yet profound act of kindness sowed the seeds of Matruchhaya.
Shantadurga Temple, Kavale
The turning point came when well-wishers from the Shantadurga Temple in Kavale stepped forward to provide Matruchhaya with land to build its own premises. This gesture of generosity reaffirmed the founders’ belief that their work was supported by a larger community of kind-hearted individuals. It was a sign that their mission resonated with others who shared their vision for a better society.
Rugnashray & Rugnasahyata
The thought of serving children who had no one to turn to became the central pillar of Matruchhaya’s existence. Over the years, their mission expanded to include not just orphanages but also initiatives like Rugnashray (short-stay homes for patients) and Rugnasahyata (patient support services), touching lives beyond their original scope.
Today
What continues to inspire Matruchhaya today is the belief that every child is a gift, and every life saved is a life transformed. It is the blessings of these children, coupled with the support of well-wishers and the divine grace of Maa Shantadurga, that motivate Matruchhaya to persist against all odds. From a single boy at a railway station to hundreds of children who now have a future filled with hope, Matruchhaya’s journey is a testament to the boundless potential of compassion and humanity. Matruchhaya’s approach is child-first and community-connected—we support children through daily routines, schooling, emotional wellbeing, and value-led growth, combining shelter, education, healthcare, and mentorship into one continuous care model.
